Create Everyday Sacred Rituals to Live Each Day More Consciously

We perform routine tasks every day. Many that we repeat several times a day or week. You get dressed and eat food. You brush your teeth and wash your face. You wash dishes and put them away. You do laundry and fold clothes. Many of these tasks are probably done automatically without much thought or attention.

So, what’s the difference between a routine task and a ritual you may perform during the day or week?

A ritual in our daily life refers to actions that we perform regularly but with a particular meaning, intention, or purpose. The steps of the ritual are carried out with mindfulness.

Routine tasks can become more meaningful when you bring more attention and thought to them. When you complete the steps of a task mindfully with an intention, they can become a more sacred ritual and a less routine task.

As you eat your meal, you express gratitude for the food you’re about to eat. While you eat, you put your utensil down after each bite and fully enjoy the flavors and textures of the bite you’re chewing. Or as you do laundry, you feel grateful for being able to clothe your family. You remember each family member and the gifts they bring to the family as you fold their clothes.

When you create a ritual around a daily task, it can have a powerful effect on your life. This mindfulness and intention allow us to step into the sacred while doing daily tasks.

Why not try it today? Here are 3 ideas to get started.

Morning Intention

Each morning before you get started with your day, set an intention for your day. This can happen at the end of your morning movement or meditation or even while you quietly drink your coffee! If you have an important event, set an intention for how you would like it to go. If your day has typical events scheduled, set an intention for how you would like to show up today.

I will be loving and compassionate today.

I will be present in my activities.

I will enjoy the work that I am passionate about today.

I will take care of myself today.

Speak or think your intention at the start of your day to help you enter it with consciousness. You’ll participate in creating the day you desire.

Evening Reflection

In the evening before you go to sleep, think of 3 things from the day that you appreciated. Express words of gratitude for them in your mind, aloud or in a journal. Expressing gratitude can help you to focus on the positive and ease the worry, sadness, and pain that can arise from stressful times. Also consider anything that didn’t feel quite right during the day. Offer forgiveness for anything needed so you don’t carry this into the future.

Watch the sun rise or set

Going outside to watch the sun rise or set can help you feel connected to nature and the universe. It can ignite a sense of awe and appreciation for beauty and life while calming your mind and body. Watching the sunrise is a wonderful time to set an intention for the day and watching it set can be a time to reflect upon the day that has passed.

Sacred rituals like these can have a powerful effect in your life. In the events that we host (Jeannine and David), we like to bring meaningful rituals for special moments. Maybe it’s to create a catalyst for a breakthrough in growth on your journey or honor a successful step forward. Maybe it’s to support you in removing obstacles that stand in your way or releasing that which no longer serves you. In our events, we’ve seen how powerful rituals that are created with meaning and intention can be in people’s lives.
